Getting the Most Out of Your Doctor Visit

Member Resources October 2026

Going to the doctor can feel fast or confusing. Planning ahead helps you get good care and understand your health steps clearly.

Before You Go

  • Write down your top 2 questions: Put your biggest health worries at the top of a piece of paper so you do not forget them.
  • Bring your medicines in a bag: Put all your pill bottles, shots, and vitamins in a bag to show your doctor.
  • Bring a helper: Ask a friend or family member to come with you to write notes and help you remember what was said.

While You Are There

  • Talk about your main problem first: Tell the doctor your biggest worry right away.
  • Ask for easy words: If the doctor uses a hard word, say: “Can you explain that in simple terms?”
  • Say it back: Repeat the instructions in your own words. For example: “So I take this yellow pill every morning with food?”

Before You Leave

  • Get paper notes: Ask the front desk for a printed paper of your doctor's instructions before you go home.
  • Know what to do next: Make sure you know if you need to buy new medicine, get blood tests, or come back again.
