What Happens During a Nurse Practitioner Visit?

A Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a highly trained healthcare provider who works with you to manage your health. Whether you are managing a long-term health condition or just need a check-up, an NP is there to support you. During the visit, you and the Nurse Practitioner may find some important items to help your health or function.

Your Visit Options

We want care to be convenient for you. You can have your visit in two ways:

  • In-Home Visit: An NP comes to your home to see you.
  • Telephonic Visit: You talk with an NP over the phone with a video link.

Please note: Not all members are eligible for this service. Check your plan materials or contact your care manager to see if this is available to you.

What Happens During the Visit?

The NP will take time to get to know you and your health needs. They may:

  • Ask how you have been feeling lately.
  • Review your current medications to make sure they are working for you.
  • Check your vitals if they are in your home.
  • Answer any questions you have about your health goals.

How to Prepare

To get the most out of your visit, it helps to be ready:

  • Have your medicine list handy: Keep a list of all pills and vitamins you take.
  • Write down questions: If you have been worried about a symptom or have a question about your care, write it down so you do not forget.
  • Find a quiet space: If you are having a phone visit, make sure you are in a quiet room where you can hear well.
